I read a shocking article on CNN today about the poor ability that most people have when it comes to basic math skills. A variety of statistics were quoted about how few people could figure out a simple weekly paycheck, how our teachers are qualified without passing a single math question, how most people can’t figure out the amount to tip a waitress, and how we lack the basic skills to handle everyday finances. Obviously not everyone has these math problems but there are shocking number of people who have real trouble.

The one that struck me was the stat saying that 20 million people get help filling out their 1040EZ form at tax time, the simple one with only 10 questions. I was so surprised I read that stat aloud to my co-workers and to my shock, one of them admitted that he, too, got help with his 1040EZ. While I felt bad about his situation, I was also amazed. That form is the equivalent of a 4th grade math problem, where you fill in the blanks, add up a couple of numbers and then sign your name. But apparently some people are so confused by numbers (or perhaps just fear) that they can’t figure it out.

Being afraid of the form is different from an inability to do it. I am more concerned about those who are unable to figure out the form. That is a sign that our country’s school systems are failing millions of people. These basic financial skills should be taught at an early age, we should not be afraid to balance our checkbooks, fill out the simple forms, or calculate a tip. We cannot escape the need for basic math skills and with each passing year the requirements increase. Parents should be teaching their children at home as well as the education they get at school. If the parents don’t know they should find someone to help them. As a collective group we need to get better so we can keep ourselves out of the next global recession.

Shallow-V’s are the faster of the two monoplane types since they run with a lesser amount of surface area in contact with the water. The shallower keel vee-angle produces a flatter bottom that causes less friction. The downside is that less contact with the water means less stability, so they are more difficult to control and require more precise trimming. Shallow-vees are very widespread for entry-level racing, this type of radio controlled boat or the so-called Crackerboxes being the most common.

HYDROPLANES Hydroplanes maintain more than 1 surface in contact with the water. They include tunnel hulls, catamarans, outriggers and stepped hydros.

Tunnelhulls are generally often associated with full-size racing boats. They get their designation from the raised center portion of the hull. Two outer sections or sponsons sit in the water with a tunnel between them. As the boat gains momentum, air builds up in this tunnel and raises the boat higher out of the water. This reduces the surface area that contacts the water. This means less drag and higher speeds, while the relatively wide spacing of the sponsons maintains stability. This model provides a excellent balance of speed and handling for beginners.

Catamarans (cats) operate on the identical principle as tunnelhulls and fluctuate only in profile . They have more steeply angled sponsons much like deep-vee monos with a tunnel along the center. To help you make that happen, I’m going to share a checklist for your quest for home organization so you can reach your goals. The key here as that you take this list and start taking action. A checklist isn’t for reading, it is for taking action and going through the steps to see the results that you desire.

To get organized you will need to do the following:

1.    Decide where you are going to start.  What area causes you the most stress?  Start there.
2.    Choose a date for your organizing session and write it on the calendar.  Now you have a commitment!
3.    If you are going to enlist the help of friends or family, call them now so they can put it on their calendar.  Now they are committed too!
4.     Purchase garbage bags or collect boxes to place unwanted items in.
5.    Create labels to place on the bags or boxes to make it easy to know what goes in them.  Examples would be-garbage, donate, recycle, shred, etc.
6.    On organizing day, be really honest about what you really need, love and use.  Let the rest go.  It’s ok, really!
7.    Place the items you are going to keep on display or in organizing bins or baskets.
8.    Enjoy your calm, organized space!

We have such a fun but hard job of creating choreography that is exciting, challenging and functional for our Zumba classes. I encourage you as an instructor to find time to “create”. I find this time in my car and when I am working out.

When choosing your music, make sure that it represents you and your personality. When putting moves to the music, pick moves that go with that music. You don’t put cumbia moves in a merengue song or vice versa.

I have always told my colleagues that there are fundamental steps and all we are doing is taking those steps and making them our own. Be creative and try not to take the same moves and place them in every song that is similar. This is where it becomes hard and challenging but possible.

When listening to your music listen to the parts that are the same. Use the same move for that part. I always try to come up with that “ONE” move…the move that “stamps” that song. Once I come up with that the rest usually falls into place.

Listen to the beats. Try to categorize each phrase of the song. I am a 32-count person so I am always trying to make sure that everything fits into that but I know not all songs do. BUT there is a way to make it work. Knowing the counts to each phrase helps in putting your choreography together. It makes it easy for you and for the students following you in your classes because more than likely they can “hear” it in the music.
